Sažetak The aim of the investigation was to determine the amount of residual
monomer (RM) in polymethylmethacrylate specimens. RM is a potential allergic and toxic agent, which weakens the mechanical properties of acrylic dentures. The specimens were prepared by different procedures, with regard to temperature, pressure and polymerization duration. One specimen was obtained by microwave procedure. In thisstudy the position o f microwave polymerized acrylate was determined in relation to heat curing method o f polymerization. All samples were prepared by extraction with methanol and dissolution with chloroform. RM was measured by infrared spectrophotometry. The results showed that the amount o f RM released by dissolution was several times greater than the amount released by extraction of the same specimen. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that heat-polymerized specimens showed the lowest values for RM, followed by the microwave-polymerized specimens, while the cold-polymerized specimens showed the greatest amount of RM.
