About the Economy Development of Croatian Islands

In this paper the author gives the basic analysis of the present economy situation and indicates
the possible elements of the strategy of economy development of Croatian islands.
He founds his assessment of the economy situation and the elements of the strategy of
economy development of Croatian islands upon the analysis of their economy resources,
indicating that each island is a separate life-system where over the centuries a particular
type of >>islanderS<< has been shaped, and that the islands at the same time make part of
bigger islands-systems or coast-island systems. After an epitomized account of the islands'
resources (natural environment, the sea and the human potentials), the author gives the
information on the Croatian islands economy that has always seemed to be poor and
where the tourism has a dominant role. Once a main island economy branch, agriculture
has been significantly reduced, although it is just the developed model of »mixed economy
« (engagement of the families' working potentials partly in non-agricultural activities
and partly in their own household) that has enabled the islands' population to achieve an
acceptable living standard and to successfully bear up with the crises. This survey of the
situation in Croatia 's islands economy (which focuses on agriculture, fishing, tourism and
industry) and its assessment served the author to shape the possible elements of the strategy
of its development. Further economy development of the islands should be founded
upon the tourism - as a leading economy activity, upon the agriculture - as an obligat01y
secondary economy branch, and upon the crafts that can use the islands' resources. The
author advocates the establishment of the overall development of islands based upon the
principles of >>sustainable« development adjusted to the islands' and islands population's
socio-cultural characteristics.
