Integration of Qualitative and Quantitative Aspects: Perspectives of Empirical Researches of the Islands

Sažetak
The paper gives the author's reflections of the interactions of the qualitative and quantitative
approaches, methods and researches, which is the topic that has been a subject-matter
in sociology and socio-empirical researches in the past three decades. That is to say, it was
only since the 1970s that this issue has been more thoroughly discussed. Regarding the evident
tendency of linking methodological with epistemological standpoints or approaches
to empirical sociology, this debate should be considered something more than the incidental
methodological escapes in something temporary or momentaneously modern.
Because of the various difficulties, especially when are talking about empirical researches
of Croatian islands as traditional rural areas, the author considers the perspectives of their
own profitable development. The author expresses two probable forms of the integration
of qualitative and quantitative approaches, methods and techniques: the first, like a combination
of qualitative and quantitative approaches, methods and techniques, and the second,
like a comparison of qualitative and quantitative ones. Both of those possibilities are
explicated in more detail in consideration of the perspectives of the empirical researches
of Croatian islands. Also, the features of distinct research methods are ilustrated, both
qualitative and quantitative type, but which would be relevant to use in those empirical
researches.
Unfortunately, there are some specific obstructions (of subjective and objective nature) to
the integration, which the author is in favour of. Consequently, the researching situations
in which it would be relevant and productive to try and influence the minimalization, or at
best, the elimination of stereotypes, ignorance, unskillness and avoidance of a team work
and the similar troubles are tried to be expound.
