Agriculture Development on the Middle Dalmatian Islands

Sažetak
Dalmatian islands compose a separate geographic-natural area of exceptional national
value. They are the parts of one totality in which eve1y single island is specific with regard
to own characteristics, to the level and structure of developed certain economic activities,
to its problems and conditions for development.
From the agricultural development point of view, the author espresses his own attitude on
the basis of the nature and tradition of the work as well as the research results carried out
on the family farms. Specific agricultural family farms have developed on the islands. They
have different structure and the sort of products, and they differ essentially from those of
mainland (non-island communities).
In this paper, special attention is given to the obse1vation of agricultural development on
bigger Dalmatian islands, particularly on islands Brač, Hvar, Korčula, Lastovo and Vis. This
paper is the product of the survey research results: the data were collected by
methodolological comparative questionnaire on the households sample, which was unchangeable
in the period from 1971 to 1992, and households were chosen in multi-stages.
The natural characteristics of islands, the household member activities, land capacities and
owning structure, soil use level, structure and sort of products, production and market
have been in the analysis observed. Agriculture on the islands has been losing it dominant
significance for a long time. Agriculture improvement has not been thought out, but the
development directions should not be changed. Agriculture in the future, with the specific
products can contribute to the total stability of the population on the islands.
At the end of paper the author presents the fundamental characteristics for the future development
of viticulture, wine-dressing, olive-growing and fruit-growing, vegetable farming
and sheep-farming on the Croatian islands.
