Sažetak

Most o f investigations indicate that in Down’s syndrome patients is present a decrease o f the prevalence rates o f dental caries comparing with healthy population. The purpose o f this study was to evaluate, by DMFT index, the prevalence rates of dental caries in the group o f 71 Down’s syndrome individuals (39 males and 32 females). The patients and controls were classified in the following age groups: 1. from 9 to 15 years (N = 24), 2. from 16 to 25 years (N = 32), and 3. from 26 to 34 years (N=15). The mean overall DMFT score in Down’s syndrome (x = 8.34; SD = 6.80) was significantly lower than in normal controls (x = 13.23; SD = 6.42; P<0,01). Thus, Down syndrome individuals considered together had more healthy teeth, less decayed and filled teeth (P<0,01). In all age groups, Down’s syndrome patients had significantly less filled teeth (P<0,01) and the
lower DMFT score than controls (P<0,01). These data are important in taking steps for prevention and therapy treatment in population with Down’s syndrome.
