Stress represents disease of our time from which no one is spared. Stress is particularly associated to first responders, and therefore firefighters. We distinguish the physiological, sociological and psychological stress. Psychological stress appears when an imbalance occurs, a discrepancy between the demands of the environment and the man. Among the people there are differences in resistance to stress, and it depends on the way that person perceives the situation will it ever come to stress. Although stress can be positive (eustress), the stress is generally described as harmful for human beings (distress). Research conducted in Croatia on the population of professional firefighters showed that firefighters estimate stress as dangerous as the risk of mechanical injury, poisoning and suffocation. There are different sources of stress in the fire service that can be distinguished as those which are related to the firefighting intervention and those related to the firefighter outside the intervention. Contributions to the recognition of stress in firefighters are physical signs, emotional signs, cognitive symptoms and behavioral changes. Traumatic situations that firefighters meet at firefighting work can also cause the occurrence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There are a number of ways in which stress can be prevented or mitigate its effect, at the organization and on a personal level of any firefighter.
