Sažetak

The promotion of lifelong learning, and adult education as one of the components of lifelong learning which represents important part of development of individual, but also development of society in general, has been more intensively talked about since the 70s of the last century.
Even before the 90s, in former Yugoslavia certain attention was given to adult education, but since its dissolution, there has been stagnation, even retrogression.
This paper will try to give an overview of adult education system in countries of the former Yugoslavia through the comparison of their legislation. Slovenia, as the member of the European Union, has achieved the most in this area. Croatia, just before joining the European Union, is trying to follow the example of Slovenia, but according to some researches, only 2,3% of adult population in 2009 was involved in some lifelong learning project. That is quite below the EU average. Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo regulated this field by specific Adult education acts, while Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia are still working on institutionalisation of this field.
