ANDRAGOGICAL PROFESSION AND EDUCATION OF ADULTS WITH INTELLECTUAL DIFFICULTIES

Education of adults with intellectual difficulties is an area where three fields of theory and practice overlap – adult education, disability issues, and inclusive education – but, has a marginal status within each of them. In the paper it will be discussed how three main approaches towards people with intellectual difficulties which emerged in the second half of 20th century – expert (medical) approach, normalization, inclusion – can be related to three approaches towards education of adults with intellectual difficulties – education as a therapy, education as a prerequisite for the inclusion in society, and inclusive education of adults with intellectual difficulties. Although it is possible to trace their chronological development, all three approaches often exist side by side, in time and space.
Main features of implementation of education of adults with intellectual difficulties in Croatia will be presented: dominant approaches, objectives, typical providers, programmes and learners. In spite of strengthening of inclusive approach, this area has mostly been linked to education and rehabilitation activities and education and rehabilitation experts, and has been rarely present within the andragogical context. With strengthening of demands for the inclusion of persons with intellectual difficulties in existing forms of implementation of adult education a question will arise about the extent in which andragogical activities and andragogical competences will have to be redefined in order to include activities, knowledge and skills that were previously linked exclusively to specialized experts for persons with intellectual difficulties.
