Stereophotography of the lower total prosthesis supporting area

Prosthetic therapy using total prostheses tends to compensate for functional incapacity of the stomatognathic system. Good retention, stabilization and appropriate support are required for a prosthesis to fulfil its function successfully. Lower total prostheses, however, are still associated with some specific problems. In this study, differences in the size of the lower total prosthesis support depending on the position and function of the tongue were assessed. In the same patients, plaster casts of the lower edentulous jaws were taken. Supporting areas were found to depend on the relation between the alveolar ridge and the surrounding active structures, and ranged from 103.20 to 205.5 mm2, mean 145.99 mm2. Differences among arithmetical means of the supporting areas for the given positions were tested by comparing two mean values with various standard deviations at the level of statistical significance, p = 0,05. Measurements were done by stereophotography, an analytical method quite easily related to automatic computer processing and allowing the results to be both graphically and numerically presented.
