The significance of conformity of the shape of a face with the shape of the upper central incisors

Sažetak
The author investigated the degree of conformity of the shape of a
face with the shape of the upper central incisors in our population. The
investigaton was carried out on the sample of 250 subjects, 120 males and 130 females. The shapes of the faces and the teeth were divided into three types according to Williams: oval, square and triangular. The shape of a face was determined by measuring the width of the face at three levels: at the positions of the anthropometric points frontotemporale — frontotemporale,zygion — zygion, gonion — gonion. The width of the upper central incisor was measured at three levels too: at the neck of the tooth, the middle of the tooth crown and at the incisal edge. Afterwards, each type of a face shape was compared with the different shapes of the incisors. There is a high degree of conformity in the type of a face shape with the shape of the frontal teeth in our population, conformity for the oval type is most frequent: in males it was found in 78% and in females in 61% of cases. For the square type of the face and the teeth the conformity was found in 11% of males and in 14% of females. The triangular shape of the face and the teeth conformed in 6% of males, and in 12% of females. The conformity of the single face shapes with the different shapes of the incisors, except for the oval one, was found in greater number in females then in males. The results of this investigation can be applied both in the dental industry (in manufacturing of the artificial teeth), as well as in clinical prosthetics. At the same time they show the anthropometric characteristics specific for our population.
