The necessity of exact estimation of neuralgic pains in the facial region

In the introduction it is pointed out that neuralgic pains in the facial region may be caused by malign tumours which are often clinically hardly visible and may be quite distant with respect to the projections of pains that are of radiating character. Two groups of patients hospitalized at the University Department of Oral and Facial Surgery in Zagreb were examined. The first group consisted of 110 randomly selected cases of clinically and pathohistologically proved malign tumours in the area of the mouth, pharynx, jaws and face. Patients who had neuralgic pains at the beginnig of the disease were selected out of this group. The following elements were analyzed: the area of pathological process, the area of pain diffusion, their mutual relationship and the treatment done before the definite diagnosis. The second group consisted of the documentation of 90 patients admitted to the Department under suspicion of trigeminus neuralgia. In this group, the relationship between the first and final diagnoses was considered, particularly of those cases with the final diagnosis of malign tumor. The results have shown that neuralgic pains in the facial region can be the first symptom of malign tumours, which are most frequently found in the oral cavity, nasopharyngeal
and surrounding regions. For this reason, an interdisciplinary approach and the application of the latest methods of examination in making a diagnosis are of vital importance for patients with uncertain, atypical or inexplicable neuralgic pains.
