Field survey and trial excavations on the area of the construction of the Vikovci zapad - Mirkovci bypass

Sažetak

During the field survey and trial excavations in the area of the construction of the Vinkovci bypass an unknown site was recorded. The bypass passes through the southern outskirts of the town (Fig. 1) and crosses the Bosut River and mild elevation on its eastern side. On the surface of this elevation, the finds that indicate the existence of prehistoric and medieval site AN 1 Vinkovci - Jošine were collected. The northern part of Jošine is separated from the adjacent site Ervenica by the creek of the same name. At the site Ervenica finds from various periods were registered durig a number of small-scale excavations (Fig. 2). On the surface of ploughland on the site Jošine a number of fragments of pottery, fragments of daub and bricks as well as microliths that spread across some two hundred meters from the eastern coast of the Bosut river were collected (Fig. 3). Trial excavations in the central part of the site revealed that there are at least two horizons of settling - one with the medieval burials and other with prehistoric (Fig. 4–5). Based on the results of trial excavation, the surface area for the rescue excavations spreading on 10.600 m2 was defined. During the field survey and trial excavations ceramic and lithic finds were collected which set the time frame for the site, i.e. the Neolithic period (Starčevo and Sopot cultures) and the Late Middle Ages. Future rescue excavations of the site AN 1 Vinkovci - Jošine will enable the gathering of new knowledge about the population of Vinkovci during the Neolithic and Late Middle Ages. The excavation of the larger area of the site will have attested the infrastructure of the settlement of the eponymous Sopot culture.
