Sažetak

Among the 15 species of snakes that live in Croatia three are venomous: nosehorned viper (Vipera ammodytes), common adder (Vipera berus) and Orsini's viper (Vipera ursinii), all belonging to the family of vipers (Viperidae). Their venom is primarily hemotoxic, although some elements of neurotoxicity and cardiotoxicity have been established as well. Although their bite presents a major health problem, fatalities are relatively rare. The recent acquisition of new species of venomous snakes by the Zagreb Zoo, as well as exhibitions of the world best known venomous snakes by private breeders, aroused interest not only among the general public but also among medical doctors to learn more information about venomous snakebites in general. Polyvalent antidotes by various manufacturers include most common venomous snakes of certain geographical areas. Given the possibility of snakebite envenomation by world's most venomous snakes in our country, it is important to establish good connection between medical institutions and companies such as “Serum Depot Berlin e.V.” in case of the need for urgent acquisition of appropriate antivenom and direct exchange of experience “on line” with the appropriate specialist in medical toxicology. The antivenom produced by the Zagreb Institute of Immunology is an excellent antidote for all our venomous snakes and it should be available in medical centers in all parts of Croatia.
