Injuries to the parodontium developing in cases of functional disorders of the masticatory system

Sažetak
The parodontium is an integral part of the masticatory system whereby the limits of physiological pressure determine the adaptive capacity of the tissue. Functional disorders which occur in any part of the masticatory system may cause injury to the parodontium Non-physiological pressure on the parodontium, hypofunction, dysfunction or parafunction, may iead to occlusion trauma which clinically becomes manifest by increased mobility of the teeth. Increased mobility of the teeth in cases of dysfunction or parafunction develops because of disorders in the blood circulation in the desmodontium. In cases of prolonged hypofunction, the collagen fibres of the desmodontium tend to weaken and traumatic pressure leads to injury of the desmodontium. If supra-alveolar parodontal destruction caused by marginal infection is present, occlusal trauma will speed up transdesmontal progression of the process and affect the topograhpy of destruction in the deeper parts of the supporting apparatus of the teeth.
