Sažetak

Foreign language learning depends on
various factors. These include linguistic competence in the mother tongue
(dominant system, L1), linguistic competence in the second language which
enables the development of supralinguistic thinking (subsystems L2, L3 etc.),
the conditions in which a language is learned and the reasons and motives for
learning.
When dealing with multilingual discourse, the process of second (foreign)
language learning involves the development of interlanguage, regardless of the
age of the learner. The existence of interlanguage implies the existence of
parallel language codes. An interlanguage field develops which opens the issue
of language, interlanguage and superlanguage, particularly in early language
acquisition. Interlanguage is characterized by mixing codes at almost every
level of learning: transferring orthographic and grammatical features from L1
to L2; complementing L2 with L1 (mainly on the lexical level); adapting L2 to
the system of L1 (on the grammatical level); the communicative use of the L2
system with elements of the L1 system (on the suprasegmental level) etc.
For all these reasons, interlanguage and opening an interlanguage field can be
observed in two ways - as an aggravating circumstance in language learning
(from the point of view of language errors which inevitably accompany the
process of language learning), but also as a positive stimulus (from the point
of view of language potency, where superlanguage helps forming a general
linguistic system through a model of paradigmatic transfer). If we want to
facilitate L2 learning and make it more efficient (particularly if L2 is the
standard idiom of the Croatian language), the interlanguage field should be
treated as linguistic potential, or, in other words, as the field of language
learning, which will close down if not used in time and will become a source
of permanent language errors.
