Sažetak

According to statistical data, the incidence of circular caries in deciduous teeth amounts to 3—6% in relation to other forms of carious changes. As regards the etiology, it is considered that poor mineralization of the hard dental tissues is the most responsible factor, but other factors also contribute (constitution, rachitis, latent tuberculosis, chronic diseases, exudative diathesis and food rich in concentrated carbo-hydrates). The author conducted systematic investigations of the teeth in children attending kindergarden in the Split area with the intention of establishing the prevalence of circular caries in these children and to investigate the more important factors which might have brought about this condition. He examined 2.820 children ( 1.648 girls and 1.172 boys) aged from 3 to 6. On this occasion he noticed that 1.760 test subjects (62%) of the investigated number of children suffered from dental caries and 150 of these had circular caries (8.5%5. Circular caries was more frequent in children who as infants had been nourished artifically, i.e. bottle-fed and not breast-fed (61%). Of the total number of test subjects with circular caries, 73% had suffered from one or other of the infectious diseases. A positive tuberculin reaction was seen in 27% of these children while 19% had yellowish to dark grey stained teeth due to the harmful effect of tetracycline therapy. On the basis of the aforesaid, one may conclude that the prevalence of circular caries in our test subjects was significantly higher in relation to the results of investigations so far concluded. We consider that this condition, among other factors, was brought about by the harmful effect of tetracycline preparations which, if they are applied during the development period of the teeth, show a tendency to form deposits in the hard dental tissues. The enamel and dentine are therefore of poorer structural composition and are subject to dental caries, hypoplasia and dyscoloration. Since tetracyclines have been greatly used in our parts over the last decade, one may assume that this circumstance has a certain influence on the increased incidence of circular caries of the deciduous teeth in the children attending kindergarden in the Split area in relation to other form of carious changes.
