Sažetak

The article reviews the book by James Clifford “The Predicament of Culture”, with the emphasis on the introductory chapter as well as on the third one, which deals with ethnographic collections and the phenomenon of collecting. Clifford, from a standpoint of the 20th century, critically reexamines the history of collecting non-Western art and culture, and establishes a special relation between the Tribal and the Modern. In the last part of the article, in accordance with Clifford’s thoughts, the author deals with the interest in folk art in Croatia, and with the problems of museum presentation of folkloric art expression. A gap between museological and ethnographical theory and practice has been pointed out.
