Sažetak

The paper deals with the topic of 2011 French law, which bans the wearing of Muslim burqas and niqabs, by presenting the analysis of Croatian media reports on its enactment. The prominent aspects of the controversy on its widest political and academic level are used as a platform for considering their media presence (or absence) as well as for the interpretation of such emphasis or disregard in the case of Croatian media translation.
Ranging from the geopolitical and cultural case contextualization, through the issues of secularism, the conceptualization of the private/public and the sacred/profane, to the topic of women's rights and fundamentalism, the burqa ban intermediates in questioning certain norms and values which are being broadcast to the Croatian public. At the same time, it questions the consistency of initial general discussions of the topic.
