The article deals with the reality and the mystery of suffering in the Book of Job. The first part is about suffering in the Old Testament and in Semitic thought. Special attention is given to the reflection of the characters of the Book of Job on suffering, sin and punishment for sin. The second part is about the Book of Job. The author gives an overview of the various parts of the Book, its division and its characters: Job, his friends, Satan and God. The author recalls that in the Book of Job an incorrect image of God is gradually corrected while the reader is presented with the true reality of God. Suffering is a mystery that has meaning in God.
