Sažetak

This article discusses the novels The Name of the Rose and The Perfume, both published in the nineteen-eighties and well known as bestsellers for many years. Firstly, it should be illustrated which characteristics make these novels typical examples for the literature of that period. Secondly, the respective presentations of ‘the Evil’ has to be considered. It is assumed that they are conveyed in a similar way. As far as the cinematic adaptations are concerned, considerable differences can be observed which may be rooted in the chronological disparity of the two projects. Eco’s successful novel was adapted only six years after the publication of the book in 1986, but THE PERFUME was picturised not until 2006, i.e. twenty years later. While all villains in THE NAME OF THE ROSE, in the novel as well as in the movie, are immediately conspicuous because of their perfidious appearance, the Jean-Baptiste Grenouille of the 3rd millennium is presented as a good looking young man, who behaves contrary to the description in the novel. This means a paradigm shift in the cinematic presentation of ‘the Evil’ must have taken place in the last 30 years. This phenomenon should be examined in more detail.
