Perception of the Educational Outcomes of Secondary School Sociology in Croatia

Sažetak

There is a wide range of expectations from secondary school sociology education, from introduction to basic disciplinary knowledge to the acquiring of certain skills and values. Exploration of secondary school sociology outcomes in Croatia was conducted as an examination of active sociologist attitudes (N = 207; secondary school teachers, university teachers and researchers in scholarly institutions) on the importance of the different types of educational outcomes. The participants gave the highest average importance to educational outcomes that related to attitudes, followed by those that were related to knowledge and skills. The differences in assessment of the importance of individual types of education outcomes were statistically significant, suggesting an integral and engaged disciplinary approach. There were also statistically significant differences between the sub-group estimates. Generally, teaching sociology in secondary schools should ensure the development of pro-social attitudes towards the environment among students, the development of pro-active attitudes towards teaching sociology, acquisition of disciplinary knowledge, acquisition of disciplinary interpretations of contemporary social phenomena, and the development of the subject specific and generic skills.
