Importance and Role of the Port of Rijeka in Transport and Economic Development of the Republic of Croatia

Sažetak
The Port of Rijeka according to the “Law of Maritime Property and Seaports“ is classified as a port of international economic importance for the Republic of Croatia, and as such generates many positive effects on the national economy. This is confirmed by many concessionaires of the Port Authority of Rijeka that perform various basic and supplementary port-transport activities in the port area. With Croatia's accession to the EU, in the area of the Port of Rijeka many possibilities have opened, such as abolition of customs zones, better circulation of goods between Croatia and the EU countries, but also direct domestic and foreign investments and above all the connection between the European and Asian market. In order to restore its old glory, the Port of Rijeka must combine all factors which have benefits and impact on the port activities. The Port Authority of Rijeka together with the largest concessionaire Port of Rijeka j.s.c. is confronting the challenge of implementing important strategic projects not only for the City of Rijeka, but also for the Republic of Croatia such as “Gateway Project”, “Waterfront” and the expansion of the warehouse-production zone Škrljevo, which is followed by the national strategic projects like “Lowland Railway Rijeka-Zagreb”, the traffic-logistics centre “Miklavlje" and the expansion of the industrial zone “Kukuljanovo”.
