Sažetak

One of the fields of human activity concerning language is that of language education, referring to the formal language teaching in educational institutions. Therefore a teacher’s linguistic role plays a crucial part in the development of children’s linguistic expression and their mastery of oral language conventions. In order to make teacher’s linguistic performance appropriate and adequate in real teaching situations, it is necessary to constantly improve teacher’s linguistic knowledge and to make progress in that field. The more effort teachers make to work on their own language, i.e. to improve their personal communication competence, the more willing their pupils will be to follow them.
One of the ways to improve pupils’ language and develop their communication competence is to acquire and follow the rules of language etiquette. Language etiquette is a set of rules describing nice and polite communication. It is mainly being realised during a teaching process, especially in Croatian language teaching.
Language etiquette subject matter is directly and indirectly an integral part of the Croatian language curriculum for primary schools. In lower primary school grades language etiquette is directly present, among other things, in the lesson about listening to others during a conversation and making a telephone call since one of the teaching aims states that pupils should learn how to “make polite conversation and listen to others in telephone calls”.
The aim of the paper is to demonstrate how a teacher can integrate additional language etiquette teaching in prescribed teaching topics. The paper also gives a review of activities for the lesson “A telephone call”.
