Sažetak

The paper deals with competence of primary education teachers to teach music classes. It focuses on the following questions: What is competence? What is teacher’s competence? What musical competences are necessary for teaching music in primary education? The paper analyzes Curriculum for elementary music school, Curriculum for the secondary music school and Curriculum for primary school-¬ the part that refers to teaching Music in primary education. It also deals with comparing musical competence of music schools students with musical competence of primary education teachers. The latter should acquire the competence to perform the following activities: singing, playing (playing percussion instruments and playing musical instruments as accompaniment to singing (either ¬or: synthesizer, piano, guitar, accordion)), listening to music and musical games. For successful performance of these activities, the teacher should show at least average musicality, i.e. the ability to memorize and reproduce correct melodies and rhythms.
