Sažetak

The article examines the relationship between theater and politics as exemplified by the existence and reception of Anglo-American plays on the post-war Croatian stage. Its primary aim is to analyze the reception o Anglo-American drama in Croatian political and cultural context and to determine whether peripheral cultural phenomena like the presence of a foreign repertoire on a national stage can be
indicative in answering 'more relevant and central questions about a particular culture. The four sections constituting the article (the irst two in this issue and the second two in the next issue of SRAZ) are ordered chronologically and reflect the degree of tension within the volatile relationship between theater and politics. On the basis of the material presented the 'author draws the conclusion that the connections between theater and politics are always there, even when submerged and perhaps for the moment forgotten, only to appear again to make us feel a new development in their tense and uneasy interrelationship.
