Multimodal/Multidisciplinary Approach to the Treatment of Pain

Sažetak

Effective treatment of acute and chronic pain often requires a multimodal and multi-disciplinary / inter-professional approach. Multimodal pain treatment includes pharmacotherapy, physical therapy, invasive treatment options, complementary methods of pain treatment, and cognitive-behavioural therapy. A multi-disciplinary approach involves a number of different specialists (doctors of various profiles, pharmacists, nurses, clinical psychologists, social workers, health and occupational therapists). The treatment is carried out in general pain treatment clinics, multidisciplinary centres and multidisciplinary pain treatment clinics. Multi-disciplinary centres and clinics also engage in research activities, whereas pain treatment clinics are not primarily concerned with research activities. Staff working in general clinics, multi-disciplinary centres and clinics receive further training in pain treatment and have a national license for this work. The staff employed in multi-disciplinary centres and clinics for pain routinely collect data on the causes of pain, clinical features, pain management options, psychological characteristics and the social status of patients. Routine monitoring is important for the evaluation of diagnostics and the treatment of pain, and also for the adoption of proper guidelines regarding the causes and treatment of pain. To achieve goals, i.e. relieve pain and improve the quality of life and working ability, it is necessary to organize training in pain treatment on multiple levels: undergraduate, postgraduate courses and post-doctoral studies. Staff employed in outpatient clinics for primary health care, pain treatment clinics, and pain treatment centres must adhere to the highest professional and ethical standards.
