E. T. A. Hofmanns Roman "Die Elixiere des Teufels" setzt sich explizit mit aufklärerischen und frühromantischen geschichtsphilosophischen Modellen auseinander. Indem drei geschichtsphilosophische Ordnungsfiguren (Wiederholung, Genealogie, christliche Heilsgeschichte) überlagert und die Unterscheidungen histoire/discours sowie story/history problematisiert werden, wird in Form einer Ästhetik des Disparaten die Organisierbarkeit und Modellierbarkeit von Geschichte hinterfragt. Hoffmann bietet uns keine alternative Geschichte, sondern eine Alternative zu Geschichte und Geschichtsphilosophie und fragt schließlich, wie viel Kontingenz, Unstimmigkeit und Disparatheit die Literatur um 1800 vertragen und vermitteln kann, ohne sich als Medium aufzulösen.
E.T.A. Hoffmann’s novel "The Devil’s Elixir" explicitly deals with Enlightenment and early Romantic models of the philosophy of history. By focusing on the superimposition of three figures of order in the philosophy of history (repetition, genealogy and Christian story of salvation) and the distinctions between story and discourse, the article analyzes the way in which the aesthetics of the disparate questions the organization and modeling of history. Hoffmann does not offer an alternative history, but an alternative to history and the philosophy of history. Ultimately, he poses the question of how much contingency, dissonance and disparity can be tolerated and conveyed by the medium of literature around 1800 without it dissolving and disintegrating.
