In Benjamin Steins Roman "Die Leinwand" (2010) bildet der Skandal um eine erfundene Shoah-Autobiographie auf der Folie des realhistorischen ‚Falls Wilkomirski‘ den Hintergrund der Handlung, vor dem sich die Lebensgeschichten zweier Ich-Erzähler entfalten. Durch das Zusammenspiel der Erzählstränge inszeniert der Roman formal wie inhaltlich ein Vexierspiel um die Frage nach dem Verhältnis von Identität, Vergangenheits(re)konstruktionen und ihrer Erzählbarkeit. Steins Roman macht mittels dieser Textstrategie den bisweilen verborgenen Zusammenhang von Erinnerung und Identitätsbildung bewusst und erweist sich zugleich als Reflexion auf die möglichen Bezugspunkte jüdischer Identitätskonstruktion(en).
Benjamin Stein’s novel "Die Leinwand" (2010), implicitly structured against the backdrop of the historically authentic scandal of Bijamin Wilkomirski’s fake Shoah-autobiography, portrays the life story of two first-person narrators. Combining the two plots, the novel poses the question of the relationship between identity, narrative (re)construction of the past and the possibility of its narration both on the formal as well as on the content-related level. Using this narrative strategy, Stein brings to the fore the hidden link between memory and identity formation which at the same time proves to be a reflection on the possible reference points of Jewish identity construct(s).
