Sažetak

The quality of health protection, according to the World Health Organization, is the care or service that meets certain criteria and specific requirements, and reflects the current state of knowledge and available means as well as the expectations of maximum gain with minimal risk to patient’s health. The main intent of this paper is to examine the justifiability of frequent periodical medical examinations of port workers, and look into occupational injuries and morbidity of workers as a marker for overall health protection.
The study was carried out on 400 port workers who had their regular periodical examinations during 2008 and 2009, out of which 383 workers were examined in both 2008 and 2009. Data from the chosen occupational health specialist’s office was used for this study, along with the Luka Rijeka plc safety at work services. For the purpose of analyzing morbidity of workers, data on the most frequent diagnosis (according to MKB 10 Classification) was used. In addition to the analysis of occupational injuries, the study also included the estimated level of alcoholism at the work place. Data was presented in the form of frequencies (percentages) and the comparisons between certain categories were analyzed using the hi-square test.
The study results opened several issues regarding the frequency of periodical medical examinations of port workers under 40 years of age as well as those over 40.
