IVAN STOJKOVIĆ FROM DUBROVNIK AS A READER OF ST. JEROME’S WORKS.

Sažetak
In the history of the Church, as well in the history of the University of Paris and Croatian people Ivan Stojković (ca. 1395-1443) was a rather prominent person. As extraordinary diplomat, multidisciplinary scientist and admirer of book this learned Dominican trod down paths of European ecclesiastical and political alliances and in a way anticipated coming of the early modern age. He was the first among catholic scholars who has written a tractate about the Church, an essay about ecumenical synods and a Biblical hermeneutics. In his work Stojković showed a particular interest in the works of St. Jerome of Stridon, who was among Slavic priests considered as »the most famous Croat«. Moreover, Dominican Vinko Pribojević called him »the first glory of Dalmatia«, and Stojković in his compositions quoted him many times. The probable reason why Stojković cited St. Jerome is the fact that Stojković in the saint’s works found support for his argumentations about the primacy of the St. Peter and the bishops of Rome. In his diplomatic missions, reports and speeches thoroughly maintained that corpus christianorum was divided and suggested an ecumenical synod where the representatives of the Christian East and West will discuss possibilities of the moral collapse and physical destruction of the Christian world.
