Slavonski Brod, Galovo, Archaeological Research in 2013

Sažetak
During July 2013 the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb continued the systematic archaeological investigations of the Early Neolithic settlement of the Starčevo culture at the site of Galovo in the north-eastern part of Slavonski Brod. The settlement belongs to the Linear A period from the incipient phase of development of the Starčevo culture. The research was carried out in the framework of a scientific-research project of the Institute of Archaeology “Prehistoric identity of the first farming populations in continental Croatia” (197-1970685-0681), managed by Dr Zorko Marković, with the (retired) scientific advisor Dr Kornelija Minichreiter as assistant. A total of 3800 m2 were investigated over the course of the 17-year long research. The investigations so far covered the northern and western parts of the burial space, which was separated within the settlement by means of wooden fences. This year the work continued in the southern part of the burial space, to the east of the area investigated in 2012. In this part of the site the archaeological research was for the first time preceded by 3D ground-penetrating radar survey of the area planned for excavation. The results of the GPR survey were corroborated by this year’s excavation, which uncovered the upper portions of two larger pits, which will be excavated in the next year. It is presumed that these are grave pits containing human burials.
The archaeological assemblage belongs to the Linear A phase, which corroborated the assumption that northern Croatia was an integral part of the central territory of the Starčevo culture, where settlements were erected through all its developmental phases (with the exception of the Monochrome phase).
