Abstracts The effect of fictionality is a discussion on the possibility of determining the fictional reference. A logical debate on reference to »non-existing« objects, such as the classic example of the unicorn, as a true value of a fictional statement, proves to be a form that is inadequate. Within the realm of the theories of linguistic philosophy, there are two kinds of solutions: the solution of modal logic and the theory on possible worlds, and the pragmatistic solution of linguistic philosophy. A characteristic of both solutions is that they abandon the hitherto central thesis of »truth as a reference« in an empirical world in which truth can be authenticated. The objection to the semantical theory is its staying on the level of exploring isolated individual statements, whereas the objection to the pragmatists is in their hypostatization of the communicational situation set down by conventions, their shifting of the problem of literature from the text to the context. Borrowing the distinction known as performance from Austin's theory of utterances, this discussion terminates with the hypothesis on the literary discourse as a performance with an effect of fictionality. To define the literary discours as performance - therefore, in light of its effect - means to establish it in its worldly creative capacity whose effect is to actually form a fictional world.
