Sažetak
Pear shoot sawfly (Janus compressus Fabricius), belongs to the family Cephidae (shoot sawflies). It is a periodical pest. In years with very high pear shoot sawfly populations, damage is severe, especially in young pear orchards. Its primary host is the pear. Secondarily, it may attack apples and sporadically attack also the medlar, quince and aronia. The first study about the morphological and biological characteristics of this pest was published in 1935, by Balachowsky & Mesnil. Recent studies and reviews regarding the pear shoot sawfly are scarce. Literature data regarding the pest life cycle are insufficient
and incomplete, while some data on its morphological characteristics are contradictory and confusing. The aim of this paper is to describe the morphological characteristics of the pear shoot sawfly, and possibly eliminate the contradictory data found in the literature. The study was conducted in 2011 and 2012, and determined the morphological characteristics of adults, eggs and larvae of pear shoot sawfly. Samples were taken in five orchards, in the broader area of Đakovo. Adult sawflies were collected by yellow sticky traps and entomological nets. Eggs were studied (period April-May) after being extracted from females or by detailed analysis (after dissection) of young shoots where the pest had oviposited its eggs. Larvae were taken from infected young pear shoots (period May-September) and studied after being longitudinally dissected. The results proved that there is some misinterpretation in literature data regarding the morphological characteristics of this pest. Mistakes are mainly
found regarding sexual dimorphism and the very small egg dimensions.
