Perioperative hepatitis B, hepatitis C and human immunodeficiency virus infections and prevention of their transmission in surgery

Sažetak

The paper provides an overview of perioperative risk of hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections and prevention of their transmission in surgery. As well known, hepatitis B and C, and HIV represent serious risks, not only for the surgeon, but also to all individuals directly or indirectly involved in a surgical procedure. These infections are most often transmitted through a contact of surgeon's hands with patient's blood, but the opposite direction of virus transmission (from an infected surgeon to his/her patient) has also been reported. The risks of HBV, HCV and HIV perioperative infections are growing due to the raising number of infected patients. The paper reviews a number of factors which facilitate infection transmission during surgical procedures and points out specific (technical and tactical) prevention measures, including post-exposition prophyaxis.
