Sažetak

This study focuses on the basic characteristics of phonation (duraton, Fo, shimer and jitter) in individuals with left or right brain damage regardless of the type of aphasia. The aim of this paper is to determine the phonation duration for the vowel "a" and the characteristics of the basic laryngeal tone (Fo). The paper also explores whether there are any statistically significant differences in shimmer and jitter in individuals with frontal brain damage of the left or the right brain hemisphere. The study included 12 subjects with aphasia, both male and female, aged 18-56. In this paper, the expected results with regard to localisation of the brain lesion in aphasics are not statistically confirmed. For aphasics with damage to the right celebral hemisphere the mean averages show a higher value of the basic laryngeal tone (Fo) but shorter phonation, although this means are not statistically relevant. acoustic analysis of the basic laryngeal tone , jitter and shimmer indicated a change in the vocal characteristics of the subjects with both left and right frontal damage compared to standard values. However, it should be emphasised that tremor more often occurs in the subjects who suffered from damage to the left cerebral hemisphere. The problem of impaired voice in persons with aphasia is rarely discussed in Croatian of foreign literaure. The reason of this lies parttly in the difficulties related to the formation of a sample that would comply with scientific standards, an ideal study would include individuals with roughly equal and limited injuries in each brain damage research results, since brain processes represent a very complex system where a change in one part of the system affects the entire system.
