COLLECTIONS OF FOREIGN RARE BOOKS FROM THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY IN THE LIBRARIES OF THE CROATIAN FRANCISCAN PROVINCE OF ST. CYRIL AND METHODIUS: FRANCISCAN MONASTERY IN KLANJEC

Since 2011 Croatian Franciscan Province of St. Cyril and Methodius methodically itemizes and digitizes holdings of all its libraries. The focus of this catalogue is on the most precious holdings and modern standardization (ISBDM) through usage of informatics and
communication technologies. After this process the material is available in publicly open digital catalogue on the address http://193.198.235.162. Collection of foreign books from the sixteenth century that is placed in the library of the monastery in Klanjec is rather small – consists of 21 items and 32 titles – but quite interesting since it represents a kind of rarity. This article describes catalogue of this Collection and reveals some of the most interesting
items. The Collection, besides philosophical and theological works (Duns Scot), includes also some historiographical studies (M. Vlačić – Ilirik, Ecclesiastica historia from 1567 / 1574), as well as some geographical tractates (Giovanni Botero, Le relationi universali … from 1599). One can find there also Index expurgatorius librorum written both in Latin and Flemish in 1599. Interesting part of the Collection is material that was written in the period of Reformation (M. Vlačić – Ilirik and Georg Witzel), which was partly prohibited (LIber hereticus prohibitus). Most of works from the Collection were
printed in Venice and in German countries (Basel, Strasbourg, Koln), but some of the studies were published in France (Lion) and in Antwerp, too. Proveniences of these works speak enough about directions from which these works came to this library. Some of items
stand out with the original bindings – wood covered in leather with some floral ornaments, which can be dated back to the time of the original press or at least at the beginning of the seventeenth century. Moreover, some of the processed items from this Collection already
have digital link to the digitized copies of the same issues kept in some other world libraries. Therefore, Collection of the foreign books from the sixteenth century in the library of the Franciscan monastery in Klanjec witnesses centuries of cultural tradition of this little
town of Klanjec and shows that Croatia is a country rich with European and Christian cultural heritage.
