Abstracts The effects of ring substitution on the stability and spectral characteristics of synthetic 4-substituted flavylium salts have been studied. Several 4-carboxyflavylium salt model compounds are proposed, which are expected to exhibit improved stability and red coloration in slightly acidic and neutral solution.
