Archaeological Excavation at the St Peter the Apostle Church in Ilok in 2006

Sažetak
In September 2006, the investigation of the medieval St. Peter the Apostle Church was initiated in Ilok, as part of the project by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia named “The Research, Reconstruction and Revitalisation of the Cultural Heritage of Ilok-Vukovar-Vučedol”. The investigation was preceded by two investigations carried out in the second half of the 20th century. In 1951, dr. Antun Bauer (at that period manager of the Gipsoteka in Zagreb) observed walls in the park in front of the Ilok school. The investigation that followed established that they were dealing with a larger object, which does not stem from the Post-Ottoman period. The second research was conducted in 1957, when the walls in front of the school were recognized as being part of a church.
The locality is situated in the east part of the old town of Ilok, in the immediate proximity of the St. John Capistran Church, in front of the present-day elementary school. The research was focused on the acquisition of the church ground plan, including its outer walls, columns and floor. The very archaeological excavations were preceded by a geophysical research in the spring of 2006, and in accordance with significant results acquired in this research, the area, in which the find of the apse was expected, was opened up. The expected finds were immediately confirmed by the archaeological research − the apse, the altar, the buttresses as well as the north church wall, two rows of columns and the brick flooring of the church were discovered. In the layers situated above the flooring and the walls, various artefacts were found, the most significant of which are those with stone profiling, which had belonged to the very Gothic church, i.e. its vaulting and windows. The archaeological research confirmed the results of the geophysical research in detail and further research shall be based on the results gained by Geophysics.
