Sažetak

Folk literature is an extremely widespread and longlasting phenomenon in the history of Croatian culture. By putting an emphasis on its orientation towards reception, the paper discusses the relation between folk and popular literaure, and therefore trivial and mass literature, which is still insufficiently defined in professional literature, as long-accepted components in the field of popular production. By locating the congruences and the distinctions, the paper aims at proving the affiliation of folk literature with the popular one, considering that its corpus is made up of texts that are deliberately adjusted to the taste of wide (often less educated) audience through employment of distinctive populist mechanisms ranging from sensationalism and moralizing evaluation to motif-formal schematism that folk authors assume from the sphere of oral literature.
