Sažetak

Crime stories became an integral part of world literature in Romanticism thanks to American writer Edgar Allan Poe. Many authors followed his steps, and the best know among them, Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie, are still favourite among readers. After a few less known crime stories, Croatian literature finally established this genre thanks to Marija Jurić Zagorka and her Kneginja iz Petrinjske ulice. By linking elements from romance, adventure and crime novels, Zagorka quickly found her way into the hearts of Croatian readers. We aim to present criminalistic elements in the novel Kneginja iz Petrinjske ulice and the inception of Croatian crime novel in the context of European crime fiction. In determining the time overview of the genre in Croatian literature, we will use an article by Antonio Juričić, Počeci hrvatskoga kriminalističkoga romana. Describing this novel, we will encounter crime novels by other literary giants, both foreign and Croatian ones. So we will look back on the literary opus of Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, Goran Tribuson and Pavao Pavličić. Representation of the narrative structure of the novel will be based on the analysis by Stanko Lasić, which is shown in detail in his Poetika kriminalističkog romana. We must not forget about Pavličić's book of essays Sve što znam o krimiću either, which will be used primarily for the description of the investigator, i.e. his classification and psychologization.
