CHANGES IN THE PERCEPTION OF DANGER, ATTITUDES AND KNOWLEDGE ON NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS AFTER IMMEDIATE EXPERIENCE WITH THE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT OF KRŠKO

In the research on environmental disasters it is usually three variables that are considered crucial for predicting relation towards potentially disastrous objects or situations: attitude, knowledge and danger perception. In this study — which deals with the danger of nuclear power plants — we tried to find out how people's attitudes, knowledge and perception of danger of nuclear power plants may change under the influence of immediate experiencing of such power plants. An attempt was also made to determine the stability of these changes. It was found out that — after visiting the nuclear power plant of Krško in Slovenia by our informants — statistically relevant changes could have been observed with all variables as expected. The aptitudes towards nuclear power plants became less negative, the evaluation of danger decreased and the knowledge on nuclear energy increased. A correlation analysis of variables demonstrated that informants with more negative attitudes perceive a higher danger arising from nuclear power plants.
The measuring was repeated three months after the visit to the nuclear power plant of Krško, so to determine the stability of changes in attitudes, knowledge and perception of danger from nuclear power plants. The perception values returned to their original, higher level. The aptitudes significantly moved towards the negative pole, but still did not achieve the value they had before the visit to Krško. No changes in knowledge on nuclear energy were observed.
