Sažetak The painting by Carl Rahl Romantic landscape with fi gures or Italian women at the well The Italian woman at the well (1857). in the Gallery of Fine Arts in Osijek, was acquired through KOMZOM after the Second World War from the estate of the Pejačević Counts, more precisely, from the property of Pavao Pejačevića. The painting has never been studied from the point of view of iconography or iconology, as remarked by Oto Švajcer who studied Rahl’s works in the GLUO. Searching for a deeper understanding of the content, and through a comparison with Baroque renderings of the theme, and taking into consideration the Biblical text, a new interpretation recognizing the theme as Rebecca and Eleazar at the well has been proposed. Rahl was inspired by ancient Mediterranean civilization, and he introduced into his works picturesque customs, costumes and types of beauty typical of that civilization. In this case he has chosen an Italianate landscape with its symbols: a city, a well, a maid, a youth, women with jars, consistent with the Biblical story.
