Sažetak

Presenting the characteristic features of art phenomena in
Slovenia, this paper is related to the topic of the main paper
about ar t i n t h e t e r r i tory o f Y u goslavia, between Europe
and the Mediterranean. Covering a par t of Pannonia, a par t
of the Adr iatic Mediterranean wit h karst background, ancl
Alpine valleys i n th e No r th, Slovenia is an exceptionally
interresting territory for g eographical research of a r t . From
a more general point of v iew th e t er r itory of Slovenia is
a part of the zone between the Ligurian sea and Kvarner
showing the t races of t h e f r ui t ful encounters between the
Mediterranean and Mi d dl e European art. The b e ginnings
o f the g e ographical research of ar t reach back t o th e
th:rties of thi s century, when this approach was int roduced
by France Stele. The results of thi s research matured into
a roundedoff picture af ter Wo r l d Wa r II wh e n q u i te a
numerous generation of Stele's fol lowers pursued research
in this field. The chapters of the new synthesis of the Slovene
artistic past are coming to maturity in the serial publication
Ars Sloveniae, however the fi rst work of t hi s kind is Stele's
book An Outline of the Slovene History of Art (1924). Various
research prolects have shown that t h roughout the long
history of cultural existence in our territory, from prehistory
and up to present-day, we can speak about the characteristic
central Slovene syntheses and similarly characteristic marginal
art phenomena; the same have come into existence because
of the relatively stable geographical and comparable cultural-
historical circumstances. Among the more outstanding periods
f ollowing the culture of t h e marches of Ljubljana, special
emphasis must be put on the older iron age, the first traces
of a s pecial Carantanian culture following the set tlement
of the Slovenes, and then art of t h e Romanesque period,
sprouls of l at e Go thic, r ich blooming of a r t i n B a roque,
regional connections of th e p a inting i n t h e 1 9t h century,
famous successes of the Modem school, and the later fruit
of art up t o p resent-day. The present situation invisual aris
justifies this orientation of r esearch, since the most recent
movements — at l e ast in architecture — reveal the endeavours
to simultaneously enable the development of regional
and local a r t istic t raditions along wit h t h e i n ternational
standards.
