Sažetak

In the traditional approach to creating environment for children of preschool age, the child is usually seen as a passive user of the space that an architectural authority creates for him/her. Conversely, more recent approaches aspire that the child, as an active and primary user of the environment of the kindergarten, becomes an associate constructor and designer of the said environment. For this approach to function, the architects and designers need to be in close collaboration with educators. The basis of their work in creating a quality spatial and material environment is the preschool child's natural course of learning. Subsequently the roles of the educator and the architect, as well as the designer's role, are considered, with the focus on two elementary problems in this process – the first is the lack of collaboration and the second is the functional pre-assessment of an object and designing according to the traditional scheme. The final part of the paper tries to describe the mosaic approach as the desirable methodology enabling the preschool child to actively participate in the process of creating a personal living space.
