Why Must One Get Acquainted With Art Music?

Music has always been present in human lives, from the earliest times until the present day. With time people have realized that music can smooth, inspire and motivate. This article gives a brief overview of all the ways music can affect people, i.e. it deals with the psychological and physical effects of music. The results of a survey conducted with 80 students from the grades 5 and 8 will also be presented. The survey was about student perception of music. The collected data show that students like to listen to the music because it relaxes and entertains them. Students prefer pop music to art music, but if presented in the right way, they are also able to accept and love classical music. This is the place where the role of the music teachers is the most important. The paper also discusses art music as the ‘trigger’ of creativity, motivation and energy, as well as its therapeutic effects.
