A CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF BAROQUE PAINTING

Sažetak
The author analyzes and attributes two paintings now in Hvar and Trogir, which were made in Venice in the second half of the seventeenth century. The painting of "Moses' Trial by Fire" from a private collection on the island of Hvar is characterized by Baroque naturalism and after comprehensive analysis attributed by the author to the German painter active in Venice Johann Carl Loth (1632-1698) The portable altar pala (pala portante) from the church of Saint Peter in Trogir formerly belonging to the Trogir convent of Benedictine nuns, represents Saint Peter, Saint John the Baptist, St Anthony of Padua, the blessed Bishop Ivan of Trogir, Saint Dominic, Saint Francis of Assisi and a group of angels. The painting and marble altar were commissioned by the Marković family, members of the Boka Kotorska nobility, whose tomb stand in the church. The author attributes the painting to Antonio Molinari and after comparison with his works in Venice and the environs of Bergamo, proposes to date it immediately after 1685, the year when the Marković tomb was constructed.
