Intellectuals and the Political Class

Sažetak

The paper deals with intellectuals as a sociological problem. In the cultural climate of the late modernity this question is again strongly stressed, begging new sociological diagnoses and research. Starting from the well know thesis of Julien Bend about the "betrayal of the clerics" (intellectuals), the text attempts to determine the accuracy of this intransigent remark. The analysis shows that the point is not in the betrayal in the normal meaning, but in the change in the social and cultural frameworks in which the modern intellectuals act. The process of transformation of these frameworks includes three key dynamic factors: the transforming force of the market, the symbiosis of knowledge and power, and integration of intellectuals in the political class. By the actions of these factors the modern intellectuals have in an objective fashion lost their function of "missionaries", but are searching for new models of support for universal ideas and values in the circumstances of globalization and global pluralism.
