Sažetak

The author starts from the basic assumption of cultural anthropology, according to which, man is constant and culture is the one that changes and determines man. In this context the author discusses the differences between cultural anthropology and other sciences, he discusses what is culture and he speaks about the relationship between the individual and culture. In the first part of his study the author makes a distinction between cultural anthropology and other social and humanistic sciences (such as social anthropology, sociology, history, economics, politology, linguistics etc.). Starting from the fact that culture means the total of human reality and that the approach of cultural anthropology is holistic, he considers cultural anthropology the general science of human reality. He gives a short presentation of the meaning of applied cultural anthropology. In the part »what is culture« the author gives some definitions of culture, he explains what is culture, he distinguishes the cultural from other forms of communities (local, related by blood and various forms of associations), he explains the difference between types of culture (wider type of culture and types of subculture), the appearance of double cultural tradition (rural and urban), and he gives a pattern of culture. In the part »the individual and culture« the author discusses the cultural forming of an individual, the process of socialization, the roots of ethnocentrism and the cultural definition of man.
