The effect of infrared radiation on human organism

Sažetak

Infrared (IR) radiation is the part of the electromagnetic spectrum which produces an increase in the temperature of the biological tissue and causes definite biological effects. This paper deals with the nature of IR radiation, its sources, use, measurement and biological effects on man, Iaying stress on ocular and skin hazard. Protective measures and the existing exposure standard are discussed. Literature data on biological effects of IR radiation on man are scarce. The risk of damage following overexposure to IR radiation is encountered in a number of situations, especially in industry. This calls for further research of the biological effects of the eye and skin with the aim of establishing an appropriate exposure standard and protecting the occupationally exposed population.
