Sažetak

Morphemic alternation is part of the morphosyntactic system. Alternation in Istroromance has hitherto been studied only partially, while a complete description and a synthesis are still lacking. This is the purpose of the present contribution, in which morphemic alternation is studied in the three major morphosyntactic domains
(nominal system, verbal system, word formation). The examples are taken from the main and the best studied Istroromance dialects: those of the towns of Rovigno (Rovinj), Dignano (Vodnjan) and Valle
(Bale) in the south-western part of the Istrian peninsula.

The alternations can be classified by more than one criterion: a) the type of segment involved (vocalic vs. consonantal vs. combined alternations),b) predictability (automatic alternations, predictable from phonotactic restrictions vs. alternations not so motivated, but limited to certain lexical groups), c) function in the morphosyntactic system (as either the only or a secondary distinctive means). To this is added a short survey of the morphosyntactic categories (in the noun, the adjective, the personal pronouns, the possessives and demonstratives, and the verb) and of word formation procedures in Istroromance.

The survey of the types of alternations is based on the first criterion. (Among the vocalic alternations a distinction is then made between those depending on the accent and the rest). In the final chapter (Comparisons, Summaries, Conclusions) the alternations are compared as to their importance and frequency in the morphosyntactic categories, the predictability of alternating members and the functions of the alternations.
